It is a less-formal, less-expensive fair held during the same weekend as the New York Antiquarian Book Fair at the Park Avenue Armory. This year, as it was last year, it will be located right around the corner from the main fair at the Park Avenue Armory. However, it will take place only one day: Saturday, March 10.

Lead Graffiti will be introducing 4 new books : a collaboration between Jill and Deborah Arnold, a collaboration between Ray and Martha Carothers, and a book from each of Jill and Ray.

LEAD GRAFFITI 10th Anniversary

LEAD GRAFFITI IS CELEBRATING its 10th anniversary since opening our 2,200 sq ft studio space at 120A Sandy Drive, Newark, DE. We'll be exhibiting a history of work from our earliest days of experimenting with letterpress, and expect to have a variety of our presses set up to run broadsides and keepsakes. We'll have a handset, moveable type facsimile page from Johannes Gutenberg's 36-line Bamberg Bible locked up.

THE FIRST 150 ARRIVALS will get a transferrable 20% off coupon for any one workshop run by Lead Graffiti through July 31, 2018. We will hold a drawing for Lead Graffiti broadsides at the top of each hour.

We'll have plenty of snacks, drinks, and goodies for all along with a keepsake or two that you can print. Free across the board.

Got a father, grandfather or maybe a great-grandfather that was in the printing business a long time ago. Invite them along and let them stand around our Intertype or an iron hand press and tell some stories about the good old days.

Dress warmly for February with lots of people going in and out.

You can just show up to the party, and you may throw your name in the hat for drawings, but those who pre-register will be included in several additional drawings for significantly more valuable prizes that will happen hourly over the event. Only those pre-registered by midnight, Wednesday, February 14 will be eligible for the bigger prizes. Drawing winners must be present to win.

TO REGISTER, please fill out the required information below and click "Reserve me a spot." If you want to register additional people just back up and come back into the form and repeat the process.

PLEASE THOROUGHLY READ the description of our Holiday Card workshop before registering.

Send a lovely thrill to all your Valentines this year with "did-it-myself" letterpress cards designed and printed slowly & patiently by you.

We would love to figure out how to do this for kids in elementary, middle, and high school so they could give them to every classmate and start a movement to opine and declare, "I like and respect your connection to my life." Imagine the potential impact half a dozen students did this in various grades of a school for the next 10 years.

How about this? We'll design a couple of cards and will print 40 extras of them. We'll give them to the first 4 people (have to be a kid and not the parent) that writes us an email and just asks for them. When they come to pick them up, there may be choices to choose. Not sure about that at all. We will let you know afterward.

Even if no one signs up for the workshop, this might turn out to be fun after all.

Around Christmas, we bought a book entitled 1200 Words You Should Know. One of the words was "opine," which means to "give your opinion." We like to opine about Valentine's Day. Hmmm, used it twice. Nice.

WORKSHOP : CBAA-related Meander Book

  • COST : $100 each
  • AGE : 15 or better
  • TIME : 9 hours
  • ALL MATERIALS, lunch and light snacks included with 3 copies of the final book

PLEASE THOROUGHLY READ the description of our Meander Book workshop before registering.

Four people who are coming from Colorado and Texas have asked us to run a workshop for them before the start of the College Book Arts Association national conference. Our plan is to offer our Meander Book workshop, which is the best 1-day letterpress workshop we've ever heard of. We've got plenty of room at the moment for others to take the workshop. Just sign up.

Composed of handset wood and metal type, working without sketches, printing using our hand-cranked Vandercook SP15 and our automatic Vandercook Universal III we will produce a 2-color, 14-page hard cover book.

You'll walk away with 3 copies of day's result plus an extra copy of a previous book to impress fellow conference goers and let you think about how to pull this off in your own shops.

  • Collaborative environment for up to 14 participants

  • the complexity of printing a 2-color text block
  • learn an amazing way to lock up this complicated project
  • encourages spontaneity versus planning

WORKSHOP : Resolution #1 : Declaration of Acceptance

WE JUST THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE FUN, so we decided to give it a try and for half price.

  • Cost : $60 per person
  • AGE : 15 or better
  • TIME : 7 hours.
  • ALL MATERIALS, lunch and light snacks included.

PLEASE THOROUGHLY READ the description of our Holiday Card workshop before registering.

When Ray was teaching University-level design courses in creative thinking, a book he loved for a textbook was The Universal Traveler. It broke creative problem-solving into 7 stages. The first stage was ACCEPTANCE — understanding and accepting the need for a solution.  Most people do this start-up stage really poorly.

Declaration of Acceptance is one of 15 or so strategies explained in the book for successfully following through on stage 1. It instructs you to seriously declare your intentions to a person or persons whom would be significantly disappointed if you didn't follow through to give you an extra push to jump off the high board into the pool. Let's make a typographic postcard you can send to friends as your personal "Declaration of Acceptance" to start 2018 off with a billboard-sized bang.

I'm not exactly sure what we from Lead Graffiti will declare, but we'll do one for us with you,

  • we'll work to make our card loud,
  • we'll sign our names on our card nice and big,
  • we'll put a stamp on our card, and
  • we'll take our card to the Post Office and mail to at least 40 people.

We hope you'll do the same.

TO CANCEL, text to 302.547.6930 or email at least 24 hours in advance.

CREATIVE LETTERPRESS WORKSHOP : H.N. Werkman

Cost is $60 per person. 3-4 hours. All materials and light snacks included.

Registration is open to anyone age 8 and better.

Based on Dutch printer H.N. Werkman's process for making images by inking wood type, placing it by eye (without lock up) on the paper, and printing.

This workshop is excellent for students in the early stages of learning about typography as you typically work with the shape of the type versus its use as part of our language. Various type shapes are added to a piece until satisfied.

Workshop participants can focus on their work while the Lead Graffiti staff keeps everything cleaned up.

Urban Sketchers Delaware

Urban Sketchers Delaware will invade Lead Graffiti for their monthly group sketching event. We suspect that often the sketches are concerned with architecture and nature, so it will be interesting to see what they pick out of our variety of old machines and type.

[ HAS HEART ] project preliminary discussions

Would be nice if some students or participants in recent workshops would read this and get involved with us. Looks like fun.

We received an interesting email this morning from a group described below.

[HAS HEART] is a Michigan-based, registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nonpartisan organization founded in 2011 as “Fashion Has Heart” by 8-year U.S. Veteran, Michael Hyacinthe and artist/designer, Tyler Way. Originally united over a cup of coffee in 2010, they quickly discovered the disconnect between their two worlds.

They realized the power of the creative process once Michael met a local quadriplegic Marine who loved t-shirts and asked Tyler to co-create a design that shared his story. Since then, the HERO[series] has continued to pair Veterans with designers for the shared mission to tell their story through the mediums of art, design, and fashion.

Typically, they go through a local AIGA chapter, but there isn't one in Delaware. Actually, I think this might be the first time I've thought of that as a positive. Searching the web for a likely connection, they discovered Lead Graffiti. We only got our new website up about 2 weeks ago so it appears to be working just fine.

Once the 18-month journey is complete, the 50+ designs and their stories will be compiled and published into a coffee table book, curated into a traveling art museum exhibit, and produced into a collection of American-made consumer products whose proceeds will benefit the Veterans who co-designed them.

We readily agreed to be involved and it will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

$75 each with a minimum of 6. 9 am - 6 pm.

Workshop includes all materials for 3 copies of the book, lunch, and snacks.
