A 1,000 piece puzzle, 20” (w) x 26” (h).

The Contemporary Museum in Wilmington, DE, asked us to do a letterpress demo at one of their First Friday events. We took a tabletop proofing press, a stack of 11” x 14” ink pulls, and 3 lockups of interesting artists’ quotes. The museum visitor would pick their background and their quote, which we would print to take home (see photo #2).

‍One of Ray’s nieces, who teaches 2nd grade, asked if we could do a 2nd-grade-level talk about letterpress, Ben Franklin, etc.

“Of course.”

To spice things up, we printed 30 of the Matisse quotes to give to all the students. We like the idea that three years later, these are still hanging on 5th graders’ walls.

Image: The pieces were photographed individually and laid out digitally, with a bit of jiggle. We didn’t want things to line up and were trying to avoid any “all white” pieces in the puzzle.

Honestly, when we got our first test puzzle to give it a try, it was harder to complete than we thought. So be prepared for a bit of extra work.
