Rolling Joe Manchin in “color clouds”

March 31, 2022 Ray Nichols

Printed February 2022.

I’ve grown intolerant of the lack of support for Democratic causes from Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia. In letterpress, I thought I would say it out loud.

There has been some interest through email from some students about how the inking was done; It is worth saying that if you have a question about any process or piece you see on our website, we are happy to address the issues (except political). In the top navigation, go to “ABOUT > contact.”

We talked about " color CLOUDS " when rolling the color on, we talked about “color CLOUDS.” That was referring to avoiding sharp edges to the more colorful ink.

We achieved that by rolling all wood type using 2 grey inks. You can see those values in the “O” of “SOME.” That grey is rolled on quite heavily. Then a color roller is lightly applied, again trying to avoid harsh edges. Keep in mind that when the print is pulled, the color will hit the paper first, with the grey essentially being overprinted. This also helps avoid those hard edges.

To show the difference, the image below is one of the earlier prints when we didn’t quite have as much control over the inking. We did about 20 prints. We didn’t get the process controlled until about the 10th print.

Our Lead Graffiti blog is a mass of varied information that is hard to understand. The search option in the top navigation works quite well if you can hit the right keyword (s). In this sidebar, we’ve highlighted some personally meaningful entries that might help if you want to try a couple of entries. To DEEP DIVE, click somewhere in the right column and then scroll down the left column. Also, if you know us, you can try searching for an appropriate word & the word “blog.”
